The International Steering Committee on ICPD25 would like to express its appreciation for the participation and important contribution of all partners who attended the Nairobi Summit on ICPD25: Accelerating the Promise, which took place in Nairobi, Kenya, on 12-14 November 2019. We are grateful for your support in helping mark this critical anniversary of the landmark 1994 International Conference on Population and Development (ICPD) in Cairo.

More than 8,300 delegates, from over 170 countries and territories, attended this unique multi-stakeholder Summit. Almost 150 programme sessions were held with over 600 speakers, including heads of state and government, royalty, ministers, parliamentarians, UN senior leadership, leaders of communities, and representatives from the private sector, civil society, youth networks, and philanthropic and faith-based organizations.

The Nairobi Summit highlighted, in concrete ways, how the equitable attainment of dignity and human rights, health and well-being, good governance, equality and accountability have tangible and beneficial impacts on people’s lives. It reinforced that the ICPD Programme of Action is crucial in guiding population and development policies and programmes, within the context of the universal 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development.

Moving forward, the Nairobi Summit set a clear direction for the path ahead through the Nairobi Statement, which provides the foundation for scaled-up, innovative and coordinated action. It also highlighted areas where much more action is required to secure our footing. This will require renewed leadership at all levels and across all sectors of society.

An ambitious set of over 1,250 commitments in support of the ICPD goals was announced by stakeholders during the Nairobi Summit, creating a unique opportunity to showcase leadership and build an evidence-based, integrated investment case for ensuring sexual and reproductive health and rights for all. We pledge to follow up on these commitments to help achieve transformative action for girls’ and women’s empowerment and gender equality.

We look forward to continuing our collaboration in furtherance of this life-saving agenda, to ensure that no one is left behind. We are confident that, together, we will ensure that during this upcoming Decade of Action the Nairobi Summit will deliver concrete results for women and girls and the achievement of the Sustainable Development Goals.
