Advancing the Commitments of ICPD25 and Sustainable Development: UNFPA and Partners Convene High-Level Event at UN Commission on Population and Development

On 10 April 2023, a high-level side event titled, Advancing the ICPD25 Commitments in the Context of Sustainable Development Using a Framework of Sexual and Reproductive Health, Rights and Justice, took place during the 56th session of the United Nations Commission on Population and Development. The event was convened by the United Nations Population Fund (UNFPA) in partnership with the Governments of Denmark, Kenya, and South Africa, and IPPF as co-sponsors. Along with other speakers, it featured co-Chair H.E. The Right Honorable Michaëlle Jean and members of the High-Level Commission on the Nairobi Summit on ICPD25 Follow-up.

The High-Level Commission on the Nairobi Summit on ICPD25 Follow-up has launched a groundbreaking new report making sexual and reproductive justice a vehicle for delivering on people’s rights and choices. Marking the third anniversary of the landmark 2019 Nairobi Summit, the report calls for better services and maps a far-reaching justice agenda. Entitled Sexual and reproductive justice as the vehicle to deliver the Nairobi Summit commitments, the report urges unwinding social, political, economic and other disparities that hamper advancement on a spectrum of global and national commitments to sexual and reproductive health and rights.

Keeping the pressure on: High Level Commission met in early September

The 27 members of the High-level Commission on the Nairobi Summit on ICPD25 Follow-up (HLC) came together virtually on 7 and 8 September 2022 to review progress on the global commitments of the Nairobi Summit as well as key recommendations of “No Exceptions, No Exclusions: Realizing Sexual and Reproductive Health, Rights and Justice for All” – the commission's first annual report. The HLC looked ahead at its second annual report, set to launch in mid-November of this year. The commission was joined for its deliberations by Professor Terry McGovern, Chair of the Heilbrunn Department of Population and Family Health at Columbia University's Mailman School of Public Health, as well as members of Avenir Health who support the data-related work in preparation of the next report.
