Perseverance and Partnership: Key to Ending Gender-based Violence

What does it take to survive extreme violence and discrimination? Indeed, what does it take to change the world? This plenary will bring together leaders who have triumphed over violence and discrimination and now lead efforts to end gender-based violence and champion human rights. The facilitated dialogue will explore what made each of the panelists a leader: resilience, determination, commitment to justice. Examples of the importance of partnership will be shared to illustrate and catalyze further action from local to global level. How does one become a good partner and a collaborative leader? What will sustain partnerships and leaders in the struggle to end gender-based violence by 2030?

Summit Closing: A Global Call to Action

Over three days, the Nairobi Summit on ICPD25 will cover over 85 events that chart the path forward for different thematic areas under the ICPD Programme of Action. Stakeholders will announce major commitments to turn novel ideas and agreed best practices into concrete plans for progress. But what will it take to keep the momentum of the Summit all the way through 2030 and beyond? The Summit Closing will be a celebratory and reflective event during which participants have the opportunity to ask themselves, their communities, their governments and their leaders: “What can we do today, tomorrow, and over the course of the next decade, to ensure rights and choices are a reality for all?”

Accelerating Action to End Violence Against Women and Girls

Sustainable Development Goal 5 recognizes that women’s and girls’ rights and well-being are central to the long-term welfare of humanity. Yet we have gained little ground in the effort to end violence against women and girls. This signature session will begin by setting the stage in terms of scale, scope and consequences: Despite rhetoric at all levels, violence against women continues in every country, and can increase in some conditions. Services and support remain inadequate. Access to justice is scant, and security for women and girls continues to be elusive. This session will take the discussion forward with the understanding that now is the time to make real change for women and girls.
