Commitment title:

Gates Institute uses advocacy, date collection, and urban health to advance the health and wellbeing of women and girls around the world

Commitment description:

In support of the International Conference on Population and Development Nairobi Summit, the Bill & Melinda Gates Institute for Population and Reproductive Health (Gates Institute) commits over the next five years to increase family planning health coverage to 140 million people, contribute to an additional 3 million family planning users, and reduce teen pregnancy in underserved urban areas. Additionally, Gates Institute-led projects, Advance Family Planning (AFP), Performance Monitoring for Action (PMA), and The Challenge Initiative (TCI), will utilize their unique skillset in advocacy, date collection, and urban health to advance the health and wellbeing of women and girls around the world. The AFP initiative and its partners commit to achieving 2,500 cumulative advocacy wins by October 2022. The advocacy wins will increase funding for sexual reproductive health and rights (SRHR) and policies to improve access to high quality SRHR services. AFP commits to mobilizing a total of $100 million for family planning from governments and the private sector at the national and subnational levels. In addition, we aim to build the capacity of 5,000 advocates in AFP’s SMART approach to increase local ownership of and access to quality family planning services. PMA commits to working with local partners collecting actionable information for regular tracking of progress and for understanding the drivers of contraceptive use dynamics in nine countries, while building local data collection capacity. Using an innovative panel design that follows the same women, households and health facilities for multiple years, PMA commits to collecting high-quality data at frequent intervals with rapid results that allows governments to make informed policy decisions. Lastly, TCI commits to working with city governments in Africa and Asia to reach a total population of 140 million with its high-impact evidence-based reproductive health solutions.
