Eradicate preventable maternal deaths and tackle their main causes by 2024

Commitment description:

By implementing the National Strategy for Maternal and Newborn Health (SNMNN) 2020–2024 in accordance with its Programme of Action adopted in 2019, the Ministry of Health will aim to eradicate preventable maternal deaths by strengthening efforts to tackle their main causes. The aim is to ensure fair, comprehensive, integrated, continuous and quality health care services for women through: a. Coordinating with the Ministry of Social Affairs, relevant actors and representatives of civil society to strengthen monitoring of the progressive implementation of the essential services package for maternal and newborn health in all facilities providing maternal care by 2027. b. Ensuring that more than 90 per cent of mothers who have used maternal health services have access to the package of essential care for maternal and newborn health, in accordance with the Programme of Action of the SNMNN 2020–2024. c. Reviewing the quality approach that is already in place, and ensuring that this approach is adopted in all health facilities providing maternal and newborn health care. d. Integrating the maternal and newborn health strategy into the training curricula of health institutes and medical schools by 2024. e. Developing the community-based approach and social mobilization with a view to promoting maternal and newborn health-friendly behaviours and management of those in need of care. f. Strengthening and expanding the maternal deaths surveillance system to cover more than 90 per cent of maternal deaths from 2023.

(3) Zero preventable maternal deaths and maternal morbidities, such as obstetric fistulas, by, inter alia, integrating a comprehensive package of sexual and reproductive health interventions, including access to safe abortion to the full extent of the law, measures for preventing and avoiding unsafe abortions, and for the provision of post-abortion care, into national UHC strategies, policies and programmes, and to protect and ensure all individuals’ right to bodily integrity, autonomy and reproductive rights, and to provide access to essential services in support of these rights.
