Ana Cristina González Vélez

Ana Cristina is a Colombian reproductive rights activist and medical doctor, holds a master’s degree in social health research from the Center for Study on State and Society, CEDES, in Buenos Aires, Argentina and PhD on Bioethics from Fiocruz Foundation in Brazil. An expert in sexual and reproductive health and rights, health care reform, and advocacy, Dr. Ana Cristina González Vélez is former national Director of Public Health in Colombia and has served on various national boards, including the National Institutes of Health, Colciencias, and INVIMA, as well as international boards, such as the Association for Women’s Rights, Advisory Panel for the Americas, and Senior Technical Advisory Group of the World Health Organization (WHO). Dr. González Vélez has been actively involved in the women’s movement at both the local and international levels. She has been a featured expert at the United Nations conferences on population, development, and gender. Vélez’s work has been published in international journals and books on sexual and reproductive health. She has served for more than a decade and a half as a consultant for several international organizations such as the UN Population Fund UNFPA, ECLAC (Social Affairs Office, Division of Gender Affairs in 2010 and 2015), the World Health Organization and the Pan American Health Organization, among others. She is a founder and active member of La Mesa por la Vida y la Salud de las Mujeres, Colombia, the team coordinator of the Feminist group Marcosur, and founder and coordinator of the Medical Group for the Right to Decide in Colombia.
