At key events throughout the year, parents around the world geared up for the Nairobi Summit on ICPD25 by reviewing achievements, assessing needs, seeking solutions and developing commitments. SDG Summit 74th Session of the UN General Assembly

24-25 September, New York

The UN High-level Political Forum on Sustainable Development, also also known as the SDG Summit, was convened by the UN General Assembly at the level of Heads and State and Government.

Through Our Eyes: UNFPA in Action, a Donor’s Dialogue

20 September

This dialogue celebrated the progress made on adolescent and youth sexual reproductive health and rights in the Eastern and Southern Africa region. It highlighted the achievements of the Safeguard Young People programme since 2013, and gave partners the opportunity to take stock and recommit to fulfilling the ICPD Programme of Action as it relates to adolescents and youth.

74th Session of the UN General Assembly

17-24 September, New York

The United Nations General Assembly is a meeting of the organization’s most representative body, providing a unique forum for discussions on the full range of international issues. September marked the beginning of the General Assembly's 74th session, where the United Nations address issues of critical global importance. The 2019 UNGA convened a Climate Summit, a high-level forum on Sustainable Development and a variety of high-level meetings.

International Confederation of Midwives (ICM) Africa Conference

12-14 September, Windhoek

This conference focused on developing the skills, knowledge and practice of midwives in the region. It also showcased an intergenerational dialogue to highlight the changing landscape of maternal health care. This session led to the development of specific actions/commmitments on midwifery for the Nairobi Summit.

What’s Changed/What’s the Commitment We Want: A Conversation for Middle-Income Country Contexts

11 September, Windhoek

This dialogue brought together 100 participants from Botswana, Eswatini, Mauritius, Namibia, Seychelles and South Africa, as well as development actors, academia, the private sector, investors, high net-worth individuals, opinion leaders, civil society members, as well as constituencies of women and young people. The outcome of the conversation fed into commitments taken to the Nairobi Summit.

16th International Inter-Ministerial Conference on South-South Cooperation in Population and Development

3-4 September, Tunis

This conference was a global platform for peer reviewing, exchanging/sharing knowledge and experience, and strengthening networks to help achieve the goals of the ICPD.

Seventh Tokyo International Conference on African Development (TICAD7)

28-30 August, Yokohama

This is the largest international conference held in Japan, bringing together, thousands of participants, including heads of state, under the theme of “Africa and Yokohama, Sharing Passion for the Future.”

High-level Symposium on Sexual and Reproductive Health and Rights, Gender, and Climate Change Resilience

26-28 August, Johannesburg

This three-day symposium focused on the policy, programmatic, partnership and financing issues that are critical to achieving climate-resilient communities. These concerns were addressed through the lens of sexual and reproductive health and gender equality. The symposium brought together experts, ministers and youth advocates. Its outcomes fed into the climate change session at the UN General Assembly and were incorporated into the Signature session on climate action at the Nairobi Summit. 

45th G7 Summit

24-26 August, Biarritz

This Summit focused on the roots of global inequality in all its forms, including global poverty, gender inequality, gender-based violence and unmet need for contraception.

Third Session of the Specialised Technical Committee on Health, Population and Drug Control (STC-HPDC-3)

29 July-2 August, Cairo

Ministers and other leaders gathered for an in-depth discussion about increased financing for universal health coverage and health security, including for refugees, returnees, internally displaced persons and other hard-to-reach populations. Areas of deliberation included health systems and human resources for health.

Costing and Financing to Accelerate implementation of ICPD Within Agenda 2030

World Population Day

11 July, Global
In 1989, the Governing Council of the United Nations Development Programme recommended that 11 July be observed by the international community as World Population Day, a day to focus attention on the urgency and importance of population issues. World Population Day 2019 called for global attention to the unfinished business of the 1994 International Conference on Population and Development.

High-level Political Forum: Empowering people and ensuring inclusiveness and equality

9-18 July, New York

At this meeting, Member States carried out voluntary national reviews focusing on Sustainable Development Goals 4, 8, 10, 13, 16 and 17.

G20 Summit 2019

28-29 June, Osaka

Leaders from 19 countries and the Europian Union met to address global issues that impact on the economy, including development, health and human rights.

ECOSOC Humanitarian Affairs Segment

24-26 June, Geneva

The United Nations Economic and Social Council’s Humanitarian Affairs Segment brings together UN Member States, UN organizations, humanitarian and development partners, the private sector and affected communities.

Women Deliver 2019

3-6 June, Vancouver

The Women Deliver 2019 Conference brought together experts, activists, leaders and policymakers to find solutions that promote gender equality and the health, rights, and well-being of girls and women. It was a critical step on the road towards the Nairobi Summit on ICPD25.

International conference on Ending Sexual and Gender-based Violence in Humanitarian Crises

23-24 May, Oslo

This conference, organized by the Governments of Norway, Iraq, Somalia, and the United Arab Emirates, together with UNFPA, OCHA and the ICRC, mobilized commitments and resources to end sexual and gender-based violence in humanitarian emergencies.

Africa ICPD25 and UNFPA50

22 May, Addis Ababa

This high-level dialogue with UNFPA Executive Director and Ethiopian President Sahle-Work Zewde focused on Africa’s progress since the adoption of the ICPD Programme of Action and the regional agreement on the ICPD PoA beyond 2014 – Addis Ababa Declaration on Population and Development. 

Media Advocacy Orientation on ICPD25 and the Nairobi Summit

21-22 May, Addis Ababa

This workshop contributed to an improved understanding of the main findings of the Addis Ababa Declaration on Population and Development adopted by African Ministers at the Africa Regional Conference on Population and Development and its 5-year review in Accra, Ghana. It also helped strengthen media awareness of ICPD25 and the Nairobi Summit.

Regional Meeting on Providing Rights-Based and Gender-Responsive Services for Women and Young People with Disabilities

21 May, Johannesburg
This event, a collaboration between UNFPA's WE DECIDE Programme on Young Persons with Disabilities and Women Enabled International (WEI), reflected on the intersection of disability and sexual and reproductive health over the past 25 years.

72nd World Health Assembly, SRHR: An Essential Element to Achieving UHC and the SDGs

21 May, Geneva

This event focused attention on sexual and reproductive health and rights as a key component of realizing universal health care. It was an opportunity to highlight the trajectory from ICPD to the Sustainable Development Goals and beyond.

Launch of the 2019 State of World Population Report

10 April, Berlin

This flagship report highlighted gains made over the past 50 years, since the establishment of UNFPA, the United Nations sexual and reproductive health agency, and called attention to the distance still to go before rights and choices are claimed by all.

 

52nd Commission on Population and Development

1-5 April, New York

This week-long session of the Commission reviewed progress made since the 1994 adoption of the Programme of Action of the International Conference on Population and Development (ICPD) in Cairo, which established the importance of sexual and reproductive health and rights to the well-being of people, communities and nations.
